Dry eye is a common condition characterized by a lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture

on the surface of the eye. Symptoms of dry eye can include burning, itching, redness, and a feeling of foreign body sensation in the eye.
There are several causes of dry eye, including decreased tear production, increased tear evaporation, and an imbalance in the composition of tears. Certain medications, such as antihistamines, antidepressants, and blood pressure medications, can also cause dry eye. Additionally, certain medical conditions, such as Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disorders, can increase the risk of developing dry eye.

Treatment for dry eye typically begins with lifestyle changes, such as using a humidifier, avoiding smoke and wind, and taking frequent breaks when working on a computer. There are also several over-the-counter artificial tear solutions available that can provide temporary relief from dry eye symptoms. In more severe cases, prescription eye drops or ointments may
be necessary. In some cases, punctal plugs, which are small plugs that are inserted into the tear ducts to decrease tear evaporation, may be recommended.
It's also important to note that certain procedures like LASIK, eyelid surgery and radiation therapy may also cause dry eye.
It is important to consult with an eye doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of dry eye, as untreated dry eye can lead to more serious complications, such as corneal ulcers, scarring, and vision loss. With the right treatment, most people with dry eye can find relief from their symptoms and maintain healthy eyes.
