Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. The most common type of glaucoma is called primary open-angle glaucoma, which develops gradually and often has no early symptoms. This is why glaucoma is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight."

The most common cause of glaucoma is an increase in pressure within the eye, called intraocular pressure (IOP). This increased pressure can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss, starting with peripheral vision and if left untreated it can lead to complete blindness.

Risk factors for glaucoma include age (especially over 60), a family history of the disease,

African American descent, high myopia, and diabetes.

Symptoms of glaucoma include gradual loss of peripheral vision, tunnel vision, halos around lights, and eye pain. However, as mentioned earlier, many people with glaucoma have no symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

If glaucoma is diagnosed early, it can often be managed with medication, laser therapy, or surgery to lower the intraocular pressure and prevent further damage to the optic nerve.

It's important to have regular comprehensive eye exams, especially if you are at a higher risk of glaucoma. These exams include measuring the intraocular pressure and performing tests to evaluate the health of the optic nerve and retina.

In conclusion, glaucoma is a serious eye disease that can lead to vision loss and blindness if left untreated. It is often asymptomatic in the early stages, which is why regular eye exams are crucial. If you are at a higher risk of glaucoma or are experiencing symptoms, it is important to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor for an evaluation.
