Refractive surgery is a type of eye surgery

that is used to correct various types of vision problems, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The goal of the surgery is to reshape the cornea of the eye in order to improve the way light is focused on the retina, which in turn improves the patient's vision.
There are several different types of refractive surgery, including:
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis): This is the most common type of refractive surgery. It uses a laser to reshape the cornea and correct vision problems. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes less than 30 minutes.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): This is similar to LASIK, but instead of cutting a flap in the cornea, the surface of the cornea is removed. This procedure also uses a laser to reshape the cornea and correct vision problems.
LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis): This is a variation of PRK. Instead of removing the surface of the cornea, a small amount of the cornea's surface cells are removed and the laser is used to reshape the cornea.
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): This is a procedure in which a small lens is placed inside the eye, in front of the natural lens. This lens can correct vision problems by changing the way light is focused on the retina.
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) :This is a newer procedure which is similar to LASIK but it is less invasive and more accurate as it uses a laser to create a small, thin lens-shaped piece of tissue (lenticule) within the cornea, which is then removed through a small incision.
Overall, refractive surgery can be an effective way to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. However, it is important to note that not everyone is a good candidate for the surgery and that there are potential risks and side effects. It is always best to consult with an eye doctor or a refractive surgeon to determine if refractive surgery is the right option for you.
