Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina, the part of the eye responsible for sending visual signals to the brain.

There are two main types of diabetic retinopathy: non-proliferative and proliferative. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy is the early stage of the disease, characterized by the leakage of fluid and blood into the retina. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is the advanced stage, characterized by the growth of new blood vessels in the retina that can lead to severe vision loss or blindness.

Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy may not appear in the early stages of the disease, but as it progresses, symptoms may include: -Blurred vision -Fluctuating vision -Dark spots or floaters in the field of vision -Vision loss
It is important for people with diabetes to have regular eye exams to check for the
development of diabetic retinopathy. It is typically diagnosed during a dilated eye exam, in which the eye care professional uses special drops to widen the pupil and examine the retina.

Treatment for diabetic retinopathy depends on the stage of the disease and may include:
Laser therapy: A laser is used to seal leaking blood vessels and shrink abnormal blood vessels. -
Injections: Medications are injected into the eye to reduce inflammation and prevent the growth of new blood vessels.
Surgery: In advanced cases, surgery may be needed to remove blood from the retina or to remove abnormal blood vessels.
Preventing diabetic retinopathy involves maintaining good blood sugar control, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as not smoking, and managing diabetes with proper diet, exercise and medications as prescribed by your doctor.
It is important for people with diabetes to have regular eye exams to check for the development of diabetic retinopathy and to take steps to prevent it. With early detection and treatment, the progression of diabetic retinopathy can be slowed and vision loss can be prevented.
